We had our annual ALA Youth Media Awards viewing party today, in the Barn, and the actual audience in Seattle could probably hear us cheering! You can find the full list of winners on the ALA’s site, but special congrats go out to our faculty friends who were honored: John Newbery Medal Meg Medina: Merci Suárez Changes Gears, Candlewick Press Meg was one of our 2017 Artists-in-Residence, she’s been on our Summer Camp faculty, and she’s co-leading a 2019 workshop, Nurturing Your Artistic Voice: A Guide for Kidlit Rebels and Risk-takers, September 22-25, 2019. Randolph Caldecott Medal Honor Books Juana Martinez-Neal: Alma and How She Got Her Name, Candlewick Press Grace Lin: A Big Mooncake for Little Star, Little, Brown/Hachette Two of “ours” received Caldecott Honors! Grace Lin was just here for last year’s Elements of Plot workshop, and you’ll meet Juana at Taking Your Writing & Art to New Places: Published Authors and Illustrators at Work, September 25-19, 2019.
    
Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Author Award Tiffany D. Jackson: Monday’s Not Coming, Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins We’re just super-happy for Tiffany, who is joining us for the first time as faculty for this year’s Summer Camp, July 7-12, 2019. Coretta Scott King Author Honor Books Lesa Cline-Ransome: Finding Langston, Holiday House Varian Johnson, The Parker Inheritance, Arthur A. Levine Books/Scholastic Kekla Magoon, The Season of Styx Malone, Wendy Lamb Books/Random House All three of these honor winners have been faculty at past workshops, and Lesa is teaching at this year’s Master Class in Writing Nonfiction for Children & Young Adults, July 13-17, 2019.
        
Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Books Memphis, Martin, and the Mountaintop, illustrated by R. Gregory Christie, written by Alice Faye Duncan and published by Calkins Creek, an imprint of Highlights. Calkins Creek Books is headed up by Senior Editor and Boyds Mills faculty member Carolyn Yoder. Margaret A. Edwards Award This year’s Edwards winner–for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults–is M.T. Anderson. We say “Hooray!” and also “Please come back soon!” Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award Honor Books Gail Jarrow: Spooked!: How a Radio Broadcast and The War of the Worlds Sparked the 1938 Invasion of America, Calkins Creek/Highlights Traci Sorell: We Are Grateful: Otsaliheliga, illustrated by Frané Lessac, Charlesbridge Spooked is a double win for us since Gail has been on our faculty and once again, Carolyn Yoder’s Calkins Creek. And we’re pleased for Traci, who is co-leading our first Native Creators Summer Retreat, June 27-30.

Sydney Taylor Book Award for Young Readers All-of-a-Kind-Family Hanukkah, by Emily Jenkins, illustrated by Paul Zelinsky, and published by Schwartz & Wade/Random House Children’s Books. Both Emily and Paul have been here before…now, can we get them to visit together?
